Project title: Micro-abrasion corrosion mapping of 316L stainless steel in artificial saliva

In recent years there has been an increase in the number of tribo-corrosion studies of materials with medical and dental implant application. Until now, there has not been a study examining both the micro-abrasion and the corrosion properties of 316L stainless steel in a simulated oral environment. This study examines the both of these mechanism using a micro-scale abrasion tester, a potentiostat and artificial saliva solution. The test conditions apply a range of loads and electrical potentials. The wear and corrosion results have been used to generate abrasion-corrosion maps. The wear mechanisms have been examined using SEM micrographs.
