Undergraduate project: A mathematical
model of the erosion-corrosion of Cr and WC in aqueous slurries
In studies of erosion-corrosion in aqueous
slurries, there have been few attempts to combined the erosion
map concept with the Pourbaix digram (which indicates
the thermodynamic stability regimes for aqueous corrosion
processes). Increasingly Cr and WC are being added
to coatings to improve the wear and corrosion resistance
in erosion-corrosion environments. However, there has been
virtually no predictive modelling work carried out
to date to establish the conditions where these alloy
constituents may be beneficial or deleterious for the
coating. In this work, a mathematical model is being developed
to establish erosion-corrosion regimes for Cr and WC at
a range of pHs. The changes in the mechanisms of erosion-corrosion
are demonstrated on such maps for a range of pHs and impact
velocities.
